Death Anxiety James Ward Kirk Scott Lefebvre Gidion Van de Swaluw Mike Jansen 9780692303009 Books

Death Anxiety by James Ward Kirk has thirteen stories that I strongly suggest you read in the order presented. The first story in Death Anxiety is Rat Pudding. In this tale, Kirk lures you into a horrible place where—even as you’re repulsed by Winston, you're repulsed by yourself, for you almost like him, until he takes action and ends up scratching some very ugly holes in your psyche. Next Kirk lulls you with his richly layered Rose Garden. If you’re like me you may puzzle over the deeper meanings as to how Rose Garden relates to Adam and Eve, and you may even look up Hieronymus Bosch and his triptych. But it’s a trick, for Kirk plans to drag you deeper and fill those psychic holes he dug into your brain in Rat Pudding with his next story—Sick—you can’t say the title didn’t warn you.

But once you’ve survived the bizarre horrors of Rat Pudding and Sick the shocks come from the juxtaposition of Kirk’s perfect lyrical writing and the realization of the gruesome terror underlying each story he’s presenting. Often the characters won’t know the extent of their own insanity, what heinous acts they’ve committed or what nightmares they must go through, until you do. When you think you have had your fill of blood, gore, and filthy air, Kirk will surround you with the smoke of spices, mysteries and ghosts.
I especially liked Synesthete, the story of a boy who was a graverobber who granted a dead girl’s wish. The illustrations in the book are fabulous, some shocking when dwelt upon. But of course. The stories and the illustrations in this book are the stuff of dreams—leaning more to the nightmare side. Much closer to the nightmare side.

Thank you, James Ward Kirk, for taking the time to write these stories for us. Sinister mysteries, horror, dark science fiction and perchance ghosts. This book is a treasure.

Death Anxiety James Ward Kirk Scott Lefebvre Gidion Van de Swaluw Mike Jansen 9780692303009 Books Reviews

This new collection from the twisted mind of James Ward Kirk is nothing short of visceral. This is definitely an R18+ collection and only then for those readers with a strong constitution. I like my horror raw and powerful and at times shocking, but even I felt my gut churn with the vivid descriptions common to the most grittiest examples of contemporary body-horror fiction. Despite the gore and the unflinching depictions of abnormal sexual and psychological behaviors, Kirk's ability with words saves this collection from being a gross-fest with some fine and oftentimes, lyrical, prose. Reminiscent of Edward Lee at his most disturbing, Death Anxiety is a no-holds-barred journey into the abyss that is human perversity and cruelty. No taboo is too depraved in this collection, with each story taking different aspects of human perversity to new levels. Be warned - this collection will offend, shock, disgust and at times, make you want to drop it as if you were holding in your hands a very real slice of molten hell. Fans of Edward Lee, Jack Ketchum, Charlee Jacob, Brian Smith, et al, clear a special place on your bookshelf - for the new new king of gut-churning in-yer-face HORROR - James Ward Kirk, has arrived.
James Ward Kirk’s horror is deep and disturbing. He has this way of making the reader really see through the eyes of his demented characters so that you view them as neither protagonists nor antagonists but human beings that you want to feel for (no matter how despicable they may turn out to be).
This book is definitely not for the faint of heart. Some of the stories, like “Rat Pudding”, will leave you feeling dirty but smiling from ear to ear. There were details in this particular story that made me put down the book for a while and say “Damn, that was gross. Damn, that was awesome.” My favorite was “Synesthete” but each piece in this collection is gorgeous in its own way. Always, JWK’s descriptions are so bold and vivid… his prose powerful and lyrical. And last but not the least, I definitely enjoyed looking at the bizarre illustrations that were generously sprinkled throughout.
The back of the book calls this collection of stories "weird fiction," but I've always believed that labels are restrictive, and this book is anything but. It's a blistering gothic grenade that obliterates any cozy assumptions you may have about small town America. The landscape is the same, but the characters are mostly monsters in human form. There's a lot of horror and perverse sex unleashed by psychos at the most twisted extreme. If there's a common thread it's that murder is an act of deliberate communication when the perpetrator is depraved.

If all this sounds relentlessly grim, it shouldn't, because it's just the stage that showcases what I think the stories are really about. What they make clear is that we never truly know who our neighbors are, or the depravity that's created from the cruelty of human relationships. The best dark fiction goes to a horrific place and reveals how it got to be that way. The warning is clear, don't do this or bad things will happen. We see with brutal clarity why parents need to be loving to their kids, why people need to be emotionally open to others. As Clive Barker said, "Writing about the unholy is one way to write about what's sacred."

I also enjoyed the writing itself, which was precise and lyrical at the same time, taking the reader in an almost casual way to those dark places. My favorite is "The Rose Garden" because it starts in the most mundane and normal place, then takes us on a mind-twisting journey that ends up in outer space. It's a love story of sorts, and I have to say it's definitely weird, but in the most amazing way.
